 DORADO (the Goldfish)

If it wasn't for the majestic Large Magellanic Cloud that inhabits this area of sky this constellation would last in the average person's mind about as long as a goldfishes' mind - seven seconds! Johann Bayer introduced this constellation in 1603. The brightest stars are a and b Doradus, magnitudes 3.3 and 3.8-4.7 (it's a Cepheid variable with a 9 day 20 hour cycle) respectively. The LMC is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way galaxy laying at 180,000 light years. It is easily visible to the unaided eye as a 6* diameter 'cloud' from a dark site. In binoculars and scopes it's a maze work of rich clusters and nebulae.
